Toon2 Building Log

The Toon2 design is a 15' multichine sailboat, with a beam of 5.5' and weighing 300 pounds.  She has a 5.5' long cabin and cockpit of roughly the same length.   There is a water tight compartment aft accessible by a deck hatch and some room forward of the cabin and below the deck.  The sail rig is a 96 sqft. triangular sprit sail with at 21' mast.  The mast is stepped in the cabin and is offset to port which is not uncommon in boats like this and Phillip Bolger had several designs that employed this same design element.  The use of a leeboard for lateral resistance keeps the cabin and cockpit open.   Plans call for seven sheets of 1/4" plywood and two sheets of 1/2" plywood.  Supplemental propulsion would be provided by oars, there is not a motor mount in the plans.  Pictured below is the first done Toon2 by John Wolfe.

31 December 2010 -  Working in december takes some innovation, here a 1500 Watt blow dryer under the blanket gets 80 to 100 degrees to help cure the epoxy.

1 December 2010 -  The process of filling the seams with thickend epoxy fillets and covered with 3" fiberglass tape set in epoxy continues with the stern compartment. Had nice 65 degree temps last night to make some progress.  Not the best picture from my Andriod taken in the dark with flash.

27 November 2010 The hull is flipped back to right side up.  The process of filling the seams with thickend epoxy fillets and covered with 3" fiberglass tape set in epoxy begins with the bow section..

25 November 2010 -Here the bottom is being fitted and attached.  Then the labor intense process of fitting the bilge panels. Then stitched in place with cable ties and seams covered with duct tape so the epoxy fillets will not drip through..

23 November 2010 - Over the past couple of days added the cabin deck wales and cockpit combing.  Lofted and cut out blanks for rudder blade, rudder cheek, and the massive lee board.  Yes that is the bottom on top just to keep it out of the way unitil it's ready to go on.

6 November 2010 - Somewhere I missed a cut line or the plans were not clear as to the length of the cabin sides.  Here is a picutre of the sides trimmed back to the bulkhead

31 October 2010 - Bulkhead 2 and stem glued in place.  I made a boat dolly from a split 2x8 and some spare 3/4" ply and wheels.  Attached 2x6" pieces to the tempframes and to the dolly, now I can wheel my Toon 2 around the garage.  Should have done it upside down as next steps include putting on the bottom and bilge panels.  Bottom pictures show bilge panels sitting atop the hull and a spartan magnet to see how a little green and white decoration might look.

29 October 2010 - framing across side and  top of bulkhead 13.  After consulting with Jim Michalak, I have put the side framing on the aft side of the bulkhead to keep the cockpit side with a cleaner look.

23 October 2010 - Ok got back to some building today.  Glued in the butt plates for the sides and bilge pannels.  Also the blocking on the transom.

25 September 2010 - Got around to building the two temp frames fron 1x4 furing strips (very cheap).  Picture off one of the frames below

3 June - Finally got some time over the Memorial day weekend to make some significant progress.  From four sheets of plywood I lofted and cut out the bilge and side panels.  Normally I would have completed the butt joints before taking this step but I knew storage would be an issue.  So I just clamped everything together tight and lofted and cut out the panels.  I made sure to make mirror images with good sides out.  Cutting them together ensure duplicates.   Now I have a plywood kit to join together later.  Picture below have additional framing on the #2 bulkhead and the side and bilge panels.  The sides look more like the profile of a locomotive than a boat.

11 April - Here's the picturs of the stem.   Also shown is bulkhead 2 with the center cut out and limber holes for drainage where the bottom will meet the chine.  I also finished the framing on the transom and still need the 1x4 backing for the rudder hardware (picture comming soon)

3 April 2010 - I had a piece of ply left over from another project so I lofted and cut BH 13.The plans had called for it being made in halves from left over picecs from the sides.  I like the idea of it being solid instead.
